Where To Get Screenings For Breast Cancer Detection and Its Cost In KL & Selangor

In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, we list down places where you can get mammograms and ultrasounds for early detection of breast cancer.

Each year as October rolls around, the hype usually revolves around Halloween. However, most women will also be inundated with information on Pinktober or Breast Cancer Awareness month. There’s good reason for this, of course, as the World Health Organization (WHO) has reported their latest statistics on breast cancer as follows:-

  • In 2022, breast cancer was the cause of death for 670,000 people globally
  • Also that year, it is the most common form of cancer for women in 157 countries out of 185
  • It is a cancer that is present in every country in the world
  • Not so fun fact: About 0.5-1% of breast cancer cases occur in men.

The WHO also reports that approximately half of all breast cancer cases concern women who have no specific risks other than gender and age. Thus, if you are female and above 40 years old, you might have a higher risk than younger woman with no other specific risks.

Performing A Breast Self-Exam

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (USA) recommends that all women perform a breast self-exam every month. It is one of the ways that breast cancer can be detected as early as possible. While not all lumps found on or around the breast are cancerous, detecting any cancerous ones as early as possible helps increase the likelihood for these to be successfully treated while still small in size and before it starts spreading to other parts of the body. 

If you are unsure if you did or can do your breast self-exam correctly, you may also schedule a clinical exam with your usual doctor or a gynecologist.

Getting A Mammogram

With a mammogram, an x-ray will produce an image of the breast tissue and expose any breast lumps that might not have been detected in a physical exam. Regardless of whether you feel any lumps or not, and whether these lumps are painful or not, women aged 40 and above should definitely get a mammogram every one to two years.

Should a lump be found during a mammogram, additional tests such as an ultrasound or MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) may be conducted to determine if the lump is solid. If it does prove to be so, a biopsy may be performed to extract cells from the suspected lump and be sent for testing to detect any cancerous cells. 

Where To Get A Mammogram In Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley

In Kuala Lumpur, the greater Klang Valley and in Malaysia in general, all primary government health facilities offer physical screening for breast examinations. These include the following:-

  • Klinik Desa
  • Klinik Kesihatan
  • Klinik Kementerian Pertahanan
  • Lembaga Penduduk dan Pembangunan Keluarga Negara

Some Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) such as the National Cancer Society and the Breast Cancer Foundation also offer screenings at certain events or roadshows.
